PwC: Only 4 percent of Romanians use Internet banking services

Only 4 percent of Romanians use Internet banking services, compared with a 33 percent average usage in the European Union (EU), Andrei Cretu, manager of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), told a specialist conference.

With 47 percent penetration rate in Romania, the Internet has very good dynamics, above Bulgaria and Turkey, according to a survey conducted by PwC and presented in a debate on issues related to streamlining bank-related trading and operation processes - 'Banks in the New Economy.'

'Romania records good dynamics in terms of card payments, given that only 50 percent of the population uses banking services and, statistically, only six card payments per capita are recorded,' said Andrei Cretu.

However, the PwC survey shows that in Romania only 13 percent of the bank-using population uses POS terminals and 87 percent uses ATMs. In Central and Eastern Europe, 58 percent uses POS terminals, whilst in Western Europe - 64 percent.

'For years, we have been trying to shift users from ATMs to POS terminals. We have brought a lot of technology to this market. But education is a process that cannot be shortened, you can bring technology to a market, but you cannot force it. The consumer we want is one that has a current account, a debit card, a credit card and maybe a consumer loan and an Internet banking solution,' mentioned Cosmin Vladimirescu, country manager for Romania and Moldova at MasterCard Europe.
According to the PwC surveys, e-commerce can reach 1 billion euros by 2015.

Romania's exports of wheat, maize double in first 8 months to 3.1 mln tonnes

Romania exported in the first eight months of this year 3.13 million tonnes of wheat and maize, more than twice compared with the same period of 2011, when exports totaled 1.5 million tonnes, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
From the amount of grain exported (the EU market and third countries) in the first eight months of this year, wheat represented 1.303 million tonnes, compared with 732,171 tonnes in 2011, and maize totaled 1.831 million tonnes, compared with 768,023 tonnes in the same period of 2011.
According to the MADR, the receipts from the export of wheat and maize were worth 748.26 million euros in the January-August 2012 period, almost 63 percent of the total sum, with 469.83 million euros having been received from the sale of maize alone.

Compared with the same period in 2011, the receipts increased almost twice (377.43 million euros in 2011) due to favorable export prices on the international market.
On the other hand, 348,700 tonnes of wheat, worth 72.86 million euros and 617,717 tonnes of maize, worth 162.302 million euros, were imported in the first eight months of the year.
